I look at neutral decor as a blank canvas that I can get as creative as I want to depending on my mood or season. For this reason I tend to linger in the home decor aisles probably way too long because I can’t choose… I love it all! I’m not pegged into any one specific theme so the possibilities are endless! Don’t even get me started on Target, if I’m not careful I will transform a space into a nautical themed haven for noooo reason at all! Decor retailers have all kinds of price points and big surprise mine is at the very bottom! Who doesn’t like to save money and have everything looking fab? I am constantly changing my decor so I don’t want to spend very much anyway.
I also don’t want to collect a bunch of junk either. I am fortunate to have many different varieties of decor retailers where I live from thrift & antique stores to premier outlets and fine decor stores. I primarily shop outlet stores and sometimes take advantage of giving a thrifted find some DIY TLC. When I go shopping I have a decor formula I follow so I avoid getting a bunch of things I don’t need. It’s inspired by the rule of three’s.
I avoid overspending and stick to these 2 things when decor shopping to give any small space of mine a refresh:
“Three pieces, three different heights.”
Styling a Side Table
I styled the side table next to my couch with three decor pieces that I purchased from Bealls Outlet. Bealls Outlet is a pretty awesome store because every Friday you save %15 off your entire purchase! Two of three of these items were already clearance priced! Let’s talk about my side table real quick: it’s from Target. The top actually comes off, we use this bin to store our throws! When I saw this in the store I thought it would look nice next to our Ivory couches (also from Target). Now it’s a place I like to switch up and refresh with the current season.
Updating your throw blanket
This is a quick and easy way to give your living room a new look. I find these amazingly plush velvety soft blankets from WALMART! Yes Walmart! There are a lot of affordable decorative blankets at Walmart, I really like the BHG collection. Sometimes you can find them on clearance for under $8! I chose this paisley pattern with a neutral pattern vibe for the fall but in the spring I’ll swap it for something that has lighter brighter colors.
Pops of Color
Color really pops against a neutral background, Fresh flowers, bright colored lamps you get the idea. During the month of February I took the top off of the bin and filled it with some faux flowers from Dollar Tree. It looked like a planter! If some of these ideas inspired you to get creative with your neutral space leave a comment letting me know!
